The Granny Curse and Other Ghosts and Legends from East Tennessee

Great Ghost Stories
This is a great book I love ghost stories and think they are really good I read this book about 5 times and was scared eveery time! (a REALLy good book will do that u know!!)

Great Stuff for Storytellers!
First of all, I like ghost stories rooted in history and place. All 25 stories in this collection are wonderful examples of folklore and of the people of the Cumberland and Blue Ridge mountains of Tennessee. You can almost touch the trees in the forest and hear the water moving over rocks. Did you know you can tell your future by counting the number of seeds in an apple? One story here tells you how. More importantly for me as professional storyteller, I found the authors had a very good ear for dialogue and *voice*. I havealready used two of the stories, Footprints in The Snow (Pigeon Forge)-- and the title story Granny Curse, and both met with very good success! Great for reading aloud -- but don't read them alone at night.

Granta 64: Russia the Wild East
Published in Paperback by Granta Books (December, 1998)

Moscow Dynamo makes this issue of Granta a classic.
Most of the stories in this collection are great, but one of them is astonishing. Victor Pelevin's 'Moscow Dynamo' is mind -blowing. Don't even consider not reading this story! The inclusion of this special piece turns what would otherwise be a merely excellent collection, into a classic.

Fascinating writing about a fascinating culture
Once again, Granta draws my interest to something I'd never thought about before. The Viktor Pelevin short story, "Moscow Dynamo", is worth the cover price on this (inevitably) fine issue.

GreaT BOOK! Great piece of history. MuST ReAD for all!
If you love american history by a great writer, PICK THiS BOOK UP! It is amazing, and he is a true american writer! Great pictures, great stories, you will never put the book down. Dont mind that I am his nephew, im really not that biased!

Thanks for Another Great Book!
I've read Peter Genovese's other two books and have to say this is by far the best. Great stories, great photos, excellent writing. I grew up in a town right on Route 1 in New Jersey, and have traveled some of the sections in a few other states. This book makes you see the road in a whole new light. My husband and I have driven Route 66 all the way and we were looking for another "road trip" to take. I think this book will be the "travel guide" for that trip. I loved it! I can't wait for his next book!

The Greek East and the Latin West
Published in Paperback by Harvey (01 February, 1995)
Author: Philip Sherrard
Average review score:

food for thought
Sherrard wrote a higly philosophical book. It took me quite a while to grasp it's meaning (if ever). It nevertheless was crucial to my understanding of my protestant heritage and orthodox present. Sherrard explores the different emphasis in greek and latin thought and it's consequences for theology, ecclesiology and spirituality. Even though he shows great love for the greek emphasis on the manifold ways that God enters our life (reflected in the insistance on the distinction of the three persons of God) as opposed to the rather unifying stress of latin thinking (god is one in essence, therefore there is one curch under one pope), he never looses balance and looses himself in an eastern Apology. We can but join him in deploring the hubris of both east and west, when they (we) take our concepts for truth itself. His book is not only food for thought, it evokes a certain humility. For what are our fights and our lovely concepts when we stand before the Lord Himself?

balanced and accurate
I always find Sherrard's books stimulating for at least two reasons. One, he does not gloss over tough issues by evading difficult questions. He takes them head-on with respect and balance, drawing from a deep love of God and His Church. Secondly, he approaches many of the topics in a fresh way, using arguments that are not always found in other texts, conceeding points which others won't let go of, and all with an apparent willingness to be corrected by those more learned than he. You may not always agree with him, but you will certainly come to appreciate your own positions as well as his in a new way. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you learned how your own tradition works for the first time (even if you disagree with him) by sitting at the feet of Sherrard. The following is the jacket's review of the book. "The division of Christiendom into the Greek East and the Latin West has its origins far back in history but its consequences still affect Europe, and thus Western Civilization. Phillip Sherrard's study seeks to indicate both the fundamental character and some of the consequences of this division. He points especially to the underlying metaphysical bases of Greek Christian thought, and contrasts them with those of the Latin West: he argues persuasively that the philosophical and even theological differences, remote as they might seem from practical affairs, are symptoms of a deep divergence of outlook that has profoundly affected the history of ideas and hence the whole course of European history. He exemplifies this by contrasting the relationships between the spiritual and the temporal powers during the Byzantine period with those assumed by the medieval Papacy; by an analysis of the 'Platonic reaction' of such figures as Gemistos Plethon; and by an exposition of the intellectual background of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and finally, of the modern western world. His concluding chapters discuss the impact of modern western ideas on Greek life and letters during that last few centuries. With an unusual knowledge of aspects of thought of the Greek Fathers often neglected in the West, and a deep sympathy with their outlook on these matters, Sherrard presents a point of view that may be unfamiliar, but should be of great concern, both to theologians and philosophers, and to historians and students of European civilization and ideed of world affairs in general." "...an appeal whose passionate eloquence is reinforced by a most interesting account of the thought of some little-known Eastern scholars, theologians, and poets."- A.A. Stephenson in 'The Month' Other books of interst may include: Sherrard's "Church, Papacy, and Schism", "Common Ground" by Jordin Bajis, Colin Gunton's "The One, The Three, And The Many", "The Christian East and the Rise of the Papacy" by Papadakis and Meyendorff, "Imperial Unity and Christian Division", also by John Meyendorff.

H.M. Bark Endeavour: Her Place in Australian History: With an Account of Her Construction, Crew and Equipment and a Narrative of Her Voyage on the East Coast of New
Published in Hardcover by Melbourne University Press (September, 1998)

It doesn't get any better than this!
I found this in a book shop for AUD$120. One of those moments in life when you have the opportunity to purchace a masterpiece. re-released in 1999, it comes in two large books, one full of large plans in a folder, all deserving of framing. The log of this vessel is included in the second part, from its' inception, construction, crew and history of the journey that mapped the east coast of Australia. If you ever wanted to make a wooden ship model of a truly amazing vessel in a time of adventure equivilant to any Wilbur Smith, this is all you will need. It could never be surpassed, as the author is obviously one of those men who is truely dedicated to his art. The anatomy of the ship series should be so good!

First Impressions.
I have just taken delivery of this volume and have been unable to put it down. This book is a wealth of information. Beautifully bound and boxed it is printed on the finest paper I've seen in a book like this. H.M. Bark Endeavour is not for the budget conscious. However, having owned it for just one day it is obvious the time, effort and the passion the Author has poured into researching this volume, right down to reproducing a comprehensive set of drawings of the actual ship. For anyone interested in maritime history, shipbuilding (including modelling) or even geography, I think this book is a must.

Haile Selassie's War
Published in Paperback by Interlink Pub Group (October, 2002)
Author: Anthony Mockler
Average review score:

Great war narrative
This is an excellent chronicle of the Italo-Ethiopian conflict and then of the battles in Africa during WWII between Italy and Britain. It is narrated very well and I rarely felt lost or confused. This is a great book and would be a welcome edition to any library.

Too Bad It's Out Of Print
This is probably one of the best war histories ever written. Mockler's superb book outlines the causes, actions and consequences of the Italo-Ethiopian conflict from Italy's first (foiled) attempt at conquest in 1896 at Adowa to Haile Selassie's final overthrow in the early 1970s by a military junta.
Mockler was exceedingly fortunate to have interviewed some of the people who appear in his book. Many were old men and several were later reported murdered by the Marxist Dengue that set up shop after throwing Selassie out.
Most of the story focuses on the 1936 war between the two countries when Fascist Italy conquered feudal Ethiopia, the last independent nation in Africa at the time. So often portrayed as barefoot and spear-carrying warriors, Mockler shows us that parts of the Ethiopian Army were fairly well-armed and trained. But it was still underdeveloped and relied heavily on massed attacks that guaranteed being massacred by the mechanized, well-equipped Italians. The book continues through the Italian occupation, the Ethiopian resistance, the declaration of war between Italy and Britain in World War Two, the Emperor's return and Ethiopia's eventual independence. It is rife with intrigue, plots and treachery, as Ethiopian nobles plotted with and against each other to see who would eventually wear the crown. It is an exquisitely crafted piece of work and it is a great great shame that it is no longer in print.

Han Sorya and North Korean Literature: The Failure of Socialist Realism in Dprk (Cornell East Asia Series, 69)
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ (January, 1994)
Author: Brian Reynolds Myers
Average review score:

fascinating
I was looking for a book which goes beyond the usual cliches about North Korea, so although I wasn't that interested in literature I bought this book. It provides a fascinating look at a North Korea that I hadn't known existed. We all tend to think that the personality cult kicked in right after 1945, but this book shows that it developed over time, with literary figures like Han Sorya playing a large role in developing what Myers calls the "iconography" of the personality cult. The book is also entertaining, since it describes the various factional struggles inside the literary scene. The analysis of Han's novels is very wittily done. After reading this book, I felt that I knew the North Korea of the forties and fifties.

not just for literary historians
This is really the only study of North Korean culture in English, but it is also indispensable for historians and political scientists. Myers' explanation of the DPRK's glorification of spontaneous impulses/rages etc goes a long way towards explaining that country's long list of idiotically self-defeating terrorist acts - from the ax murders at the DMZ to the Rangoon bombing.

Harper & Row's complete field guide to North American wildlife, Eastern edition

Wonderful resource - a crime it's out of print!
I have had my copy of the Eastern edition of this book for over 6 years. I own many field guides, but this is the one I turn to time and time again. Great pictures, logical layout, comprehensive coverage. I'm finding more opportunities to travel West, so now I'm looking for the companion. It's a treasure.

Best single source reference for any wildlife enthusiast.
I purchased my copy of this book over 10 years ago. Being an amature Ethologist and ardent back packer, I have continously found this field guide very complete and easy to use. Each section gives overviews of general species charactoristics. Specific data is direct, to the point, and covers a broad spectrum of information. Excellent color plates can easily be used to quickly narrow down cassification. This handy book is far superior to any other Field Guide on the market for meeting the challenge of identification of any wildlife encountered localy or on the trail. Why carry a pack full of books and manuals when you can have everything in this great book. Our only mis-fortune is that it is currently not in print, But if you get your hands on a copy, KEEP IT! I am sure you will treasure it as much as I treasure my copy.
